Laptop’s all around the world need memory. To put it simply, memory in the IT industry is not the human thought process. Memory in the information technology industry is what makes your laptop or PC work. There are different types of memory for different types of PC’s. You get you SIMMS, you get your DIMMS, and you get you different sizes. To find out more about laptop memory read on a bit more.
RAM, is what people in the IT industry call memory and is directly translated to be Random Access Memory. As stated before, RAM is what makes you laptop work, and you will need to find out what type of RAM to get, between SIMMS and DIMMS. We will start off explaining DIMMS, as you will need to know how to recognize a DIMMS RAM before you go out to buy more memory for your laptop.
The acronym DIMMS is better known as dual in line memory module and it is made up of a series of RAM circuits. DIMMS started taking over the IT world when Intel Pentium integrated itself into the Information Technology arena and is now the most widely used RAM module around the world.
The Acronym SIMMS is better known as single in line memory module. SIMMS where used in the earlier days of personal computers and was almost completely taken over by DIMMS. The first SIMMS where used in the middle 1980’s and where the answer to many industry troubles at the time.
The major difference between DIMMS and SIMMS is that the one, SIMMS, have 32-bit patch for data, where DIMMS have 64 bit path for data. The other difference between SIMMS and DIMMS is that the DIMMS have separate contacts on both sides of the card and SIMMS one contact wrapped around where redundant.
As DIMMS are the widest used around the world here are the common types. 72 pin is used mainly for SO DIMM, the 144 pin card is used mainly for SO DIMM, the 200 pin card is used mainly for SO DIMM, the 168 pin card is used mainly for FPM, SDRAM and EDO, the 184 pin Card is used mainly for SDRAM DDR and the 240 pin card is used mainly for SD RAM DDR 2.
Now that you know what DIMMS are used for and what the differences are between DIMMs and SIMMs are, and now that you know how to differentiate DIMMS form SIMMS and some history of industry RAM, you can go out and buy you new RAM memory card for your laptop. One more thing, though, is that the 168 pin DIMMS card has two notches at the bottom, each of which determines a particular feature. DRAM is your first notch and it represents RFU, unbuffered and registered. Voltage is what the second notch represents, with 3.3v, 5.0v and it is reserved.
